Infertility

No luck with chlomid

02/17/2005 09:22AM

Question:

Hello, I have just ended my third month on chlomid my blood results every month registered that I was ovulating yet when I used the at home kit to detect ovulation during days 10-18 thay always registered negative. We had intercourse every other day but still no luck. Any ideas of why the LH levels are positive? thanks

Answer:

Usually, before starting treatment, an infertility work-up should have been performed: semen analysis, progesterone level or other way to assess ovulation (unless periods are irregular), possible hysterosalpingogram (dye test) to determine if the fallopian tubes are open.

A fertility pill such as clomid is usually given when a patient has irregular periods or does not ovulate.  It can also be given to increase the number of eggs produced in patients who already ovulate.  While the urine LH kits can be helpful in determining when a patient ovulates, they can sometimes fail to demonstrate a positive color change, even when a patient is actually ovulating.  Ultrasound is probably more precise in determining when you ovulate.

Typically, after failing 3 cycles of clomid with your general ob/gyn, it may be useful to see a subspecialist (i.e. reproductive endocrinologist/infertility specialist) for more specific treatment.
