Popping noise in my chest and rib area

03/17/2005

Question:

While I was working out my chest between my rib cage made a popping noise. I am not in much pain, however I do feel as if there is something not right. What could it be I was lifting weights at the time. Thanks,

Answer:

You could be experiencing what is called costochondritis.  This is an inflammation of the junctions where the upper ribs join with the cartilage that holds them to the breastbone or sternum.  It is a relatively harmless condition that usually goes away without treatment.  I suggest that you take time off from your workout routine and consult your physician.
