Yeast infection04/28/2005 |
Can I use over the counter medicine to treat yeast on a 6month old baby? If so what?
Your question has several possible answers, depending on how it is looked at. From the perspective of someone who is only seeing the words on the screen (without seeing the baby or knowing your level of experience with yeast in a baby or knowing whether this is a diaper rash, a vaginal discharge or maybe oral yeast {thrush}) the best answer that I can give is that you should discuss your concerns with your baby's primary care provider and if necessary they can recommend and/or prescribe the appropriate treatment.
Another perspective is the concept using over the counter medicines in babies or young children. Very few manufacturers of medicines that are sold over the counter will place directions on the package for use in those below a certain age (typically not under the age of 2 years). Then the instructions say to call your physician for those younger than that age. This is because the medicines have not been formally tested in those below that age either for effectiveness or safety and the company defers the answer to a physician who may have experience in the use of that medicine on someone younger. This is not to say that the medicines are harmful or dangerous, just that they have not been studied.
My recommendation for the use of any medicine, falls back to a concept in medicine known as First Do No Harm. The potential risks and benefits of any medicine can and should be discussed before its use on anyone, particularly in those under the age of 2.
