What causes the discoloration of eye?

05/04/2005

Question:

I am a black male, age 33. I am near sighted -3.75 in both eyes. My question relates to a problem that I`ve had for as long as I remember. In my right eye, I have a slight discolored patch shaped like a little triangle. It just looks like a light brown splotch. I asked my Doctor, and he say that it is just pigment; when he looks with a scope he sees little tiny brown dots. What causes that? And can I fix it? I`ve been assured that it isnt an eye disease, just a cosmetic nuisance.

Answer:

The area you describe sounds like a nevus; in layman's language, it is a freckle. You can have variations in melanin (the cells responsible for skin color) anywhere on your body. And when they occur on the eye, they are more noticeable than those on the skin. If you have had it most of your life and it has not changed, I think it is just a normal variation and nothing to worry about. ....and no, there is no treatment for it.
