Hypertension in the young

05/11/2005

Question:

I am 27 years old of indian origin. I was detected to have hypertension [150/100mmHg] and was started on ramipril 10 mg and amlodipine 5mg. My mother [52 years] is a hypertensive and has coronary artery disease. My younger brother is also hyperetensive. My LDL cholesterol is 77mg,HDL 30mg, TGL 53mg and fasting blood sugar 92 mg.My BMI is 20.2 Kg/m2 what is my risk of developing coronary artery disease and what other steps to be taken?

Answer:

Your risk factors for coronary artery disease include your family history (coronary artery disease in a female first degree relative under age 65), low HDL and hypertension.  According to the Framingham Point Score System, your risk for developing coronary artery disease in the next ten years is:

Male: less than 1%,  Female:  less than 1%.

Given your young age and your low LDL level, you are in a low risk group.  Your risk will increase with age, but will remain favorable if you treat your modifiable risk factors appropriately, don't become overweight and/or diabetic and don't smoke.
