Dear NetWellness Expert: My mother (age 87) will soon be losing her prescription insurance (The company from which she retired is dropping its retirees). Her new insurance covers generic only. Can you tell me if aricept or has generic equivalents? What is donepezil? Thanks a concerned daughter
Donepezil is the generic name for the brand name drug Aricept. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Aricept for the U.S. market in November of 1996. This medication is currently protected by patent laws and is not available in a generic version.
An insurance company, in most cases, will cover the cost of, or charge a copay for, brand name medication if there are no generic equivalent products available.
There are some similar medications available that are used for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. They are in the same class of medications as donepezil; rivastigmine (Exelon) and galantamine (Reminyl). Talk to your Mom's physician about options available to help treat the disease, along with discussion of medications covered by the insurance company to ensure good therapy at a reasonable cost.
