Menopause

Always hot

07/14/2005

Question:

Iam a 50 year old, premenopausal female. I`m not on medication and am not being treated for any illnesses at present although I do have very heavy periods and tend to be anemic. I was treated for that about 3 months ago. I haven`t had problems with night sweats or hot flashes but I am just always hot. I keep my thermostat set on about 68 degrees all year long to be comfortable. My hands are especially hot. Not all the time, but sometimes. There is no swelling, stiffness, rashes, or other obvious symptom. It`s just that they will start to feel like they are burning up. Sometimes I just hold handfuls of ice and it just melts into water so quickly. I`ve searched your website to see if having "hot hands" is a characteristic of any particular problem or disease, but so far I haven`t found anything. I`ve mentioned this to my MD the last several times I`ve been to visit and he just nods and shrugs and says, "Yeah, well, that happens when you are about to go through menopause." But, I`ve been having this condition for about 10 years! Help!

Answer:

The symptoms you describe are not typical of menopause.  Has your thyroid been checked?  Are you overweight?  Thyroid abnormalities and being overweight are two conditions that can cause feelings of being overheated.  Are you on any medications that list your symptoms as a side effect? Does this problem run in your family?  If your personal physician cannot help, you can always see different physician for another opinion.
