Answer:

If your doctor has had you on allergy medication for a while and you are still experiencing the exact same problems, than your problem is more than likely caused by something else.

Listening to your complaints it would be my opinion that you should be evaluated or treated for acid reflux.  Acid that refluxes up into the throat will cause frequent throat clearing, intermittent or chronic hoarseness, cough, difficulty swallowing, throat pain and a sensation of a lump in the throat.  You may have one or more of these symptoms depending on the sensitivity of your tissues or the duration the the reflux or for many unknown reasons.

Acid reflux is usually a result of your lifestyle.  That is to say it is related to the foods you eat and when you eat them, whether you are overweight, and  if you have a hiatal hernia.  There are medications that can contribute to reflux as well and therefore consulting with your doctor about this would be wise.

We know that certain foods can lead to reflux.  Chocolate, caffeine, tomato products, alcohol and carbonated beverages can be a major problem for some.  Lying down after eating puts you at risk for reflux.  We usually recommend not lying down for about 3 hours after you eat in order for the food in your stomach to be digested and move through to your small intestines.  Tobacco, whether smoked or chewed can cause problems.

My recommendation is that you return to see your ENT doctor and raise the possibility of acid reflux so that he can reevaluate you in a different light.  Good luck with this problem.
