Does lamictal or keppra cause hair loss?

08/15/2005 11:57AM

Question:

My young adult son has been on Keppra since Sept. `04 and had lamictal added in March `05. He is on these meds. for complex partial seizures which started in Aug. 04 and which have begun to greatly decrease since he was taken off another med. - (androderm patch) He seems to be losing hair on top of his head. From what I`ve read I think lamictal or keppra could be causing that. Also, the lamictal seems to have controlled the seizures better than the keppra, but we`re not sure because he was still on the androderm patch until April `05. What do you think is causing his hair loss? Thank you for your time.

Answer:

Both Lamictal and Keppra have been reported to very rarely cause hair loss. There are also other reasons for hair loss including low testosterone. I would discuss your concerns with your health care provider. You may also want to ask the same question in the Skin Care section of Netwellness.
