09/20/2005

Question:

went to dentist she drilled a tooth took out a small peice of my nerve and showed it to me she said i needed a root canal. i had no pain or sensitivity to this tooth and didn`t even no it had a cavity, am i being missled?

Answer:

Unfortunately, I really cannot say much about your case since I do not have enough information. There are teeth that need root canals even though they never hurt. Not all cavities hurt, and sometimes the nerve of the tooth dies quietly without causing pain but still needs to have a root canal. This is usually due to bacteria getting into the pulp space.

In other cases, root canals are needed to help the dentist fix a severely broken down tooth. These teeth don't always have pain either. The best thing to do is ask your dentist about what was done and what treatment needs to be done and be sure you understand and agree with the plan. If you don't, then get another opinion. Hope this helps.
