can a patient be returned to original health and full functioning after aa stroke?
Yes, some stroke patients return to full function on their own, or with the benefit of rehabilitation, after a stroke. When this occurs, it is usually in the short term (first 3 months) after the stroke.
For those who do not return to normal in the first 3 months, we are only now starting to learn how we can help patients recover. At our institution, (University of Cincinnati), pioneering research has shown that significant recovery can occur will after 3 months, even years later.
For patients who still have neurologic problems after stroke, there are many research studies underway at our institution as well as many others devoted to improving post-stroke recovery. If you would like to read about some of the ongoing research: see this link
