Are Prostate Massage Devices Benefecial?09/14/2005 |
I`ve recently seen some things on the internet about prostate massage, either physician-administered or self-administered, as a means of promoting prostate health. There are even some websites that sell devices for giving oneself a prostate massage. Is there any actual or potential benefit in this? Does it pose any risks?
I am not aware of any proven benefit of prostate massage and it could be harmful if you have a prostate infection. I would not recommend it. At times it is performed as a diagnostic procedure to assess men with possible infections of the prostate but this is usually performed by a physician and either the urine or expressed fluid (usually a very small amount) is looked at under a microscope to determine if any infection cells or bacteria are present.
