Question:
What exaclty is a Dexascan and how is this test given?
Answer:
A DXA scan of the spine and hip is considered the gold standard for diagnosing osteoporosis. DXA stands for dual energy x-ray absorptiometry. It is a low dose x-ray that can be performed with the person lying on a flat table in street clothes. The amount of x-ray is similar to what one would get on a trans-Atlantic flight. It is painless and can be completed in approximately 15-20 minutes.
