Anxiety and Stress Disorders

Effects of Fluoxetine

10/05/2005

Question:

I had a phobia of getting touched since I was a child. I went to a psychiatrist and he prescribed fluoxetine for me. Will it help? How long should I use it?

Answer:

Fluoxetine or prozac, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, is effective for many emotional illnesses, including depression and anxiety.  Many "phobias" respond well to therapy and medication, including SSRIs.  I cannot answer whether it will work for you or for how long you should use it, as those answers depend on your diagnosis and other treatments involved.  Please discuss these in follow-up with your health care providers.
