Menopause and depression without HRT

01/09/2006

Question:

I have been put into complete menopause via a total hysterectomy. Because I had breast cancer 6 years ago and because the hysterectomy was to treat endometrial cancer I cannot take hormone replacement therapy. I am dealing with a lot of depression both from the surgery and from the resulting menopause. I have looked on line, but mostly found people who want to sell me products. Can you give me a good idea of where to search?

Answer:

One place to look for more medical information is "Entrez PubMed".  It can be found through the Reference Library on the NetWellness Homepage or through this links:  http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?db=PubMed

Another good resource in the North American Menopause Society ("menopause.org")  They have information on induced menopause (such as surgical menopause).

Generally, depression can be treated quite well without hormone therapy.  I would encourage you to check with a counselor/therapist for the depression and a gynecologist who specializes in menopause.
