Weird clear bump on the back of my throat

12/12/2005

Question:

I hade my tonsils removed about 2 years ago, since then i have been noticing small pea sized "bumps" where my tonsils used to be, they are filled with a clear fluid that is almost like a moucous. They do not hurt but they are uncomfortable, which leads to me "popping" them. They have never bleed after i popped them. I just want to know what causes them and what steps i should take. Thanks.

Answer:

It sounds as if you are describing small mucous retention cysts (mucoceles) which are caused by blocked minor salivary (spit) glands.  However, this is very unusual to find where your tonsils used to be thus I recommend you see either the ENT who performed your surgery or another within the month for formal examination.
