Ear, Nose, and Throat Disorders

Persistent throat irritation

01/03/2006

Question:

Several months ago had a severe cough with lump in throat feeling. Primary MD dx tracheitis and symptoms resolved in 6 weeks. Symptoms returned along with some lower extremity muscle pain. ENT doctor felt the throat problem was excess mucous with no infection, no cancerous growth etc. and recommended OTC items. Any insight?

Answer:

Frequently, patients come to the ENT physician with complaints of throat clearing and/or a lump in the throat.  The majority of these patients are suffering from reflux disease.  Treatment with lifestyle modifications and prescription anti-acid medications help to resolve these symptoms in 1-3 months.  It is possible that a persistent cough may be from sinus disease (Chronic sinusitis) or lung disease (asthma, bronchitis).  All patients should be evaluated by their primary care doctor to rule out these other etiologies.
