Bipolar Disorder (Children and Adolescents)
Treating Adult Bipolar Disorder
What have you found to be the most effective treatment for adult bipolar disorder?
Hello and thank you for your excellent question regarding "the most effective treatment for adult bipolar disorder." Research suggests the first-line of treatment is medication (mood stabilizers/atypical antipsychotics) then one of the following adjunctive psychosocial therapies:
- Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT: Lam et al., 2000)
- Family-focused therapy (FFT: Miklowitz & Goldstein, 1997)
- Interpersonal therapy with a social rhythm component (IPSRT: Frank et al., 1994)
One of the best books on the topic, which I frequently recommend, is "The Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide: What You and Your Family Need to Know" by David J. Miklowitz, which has a great deal of info about BP and its treatments. Right now you can get it on Amazon.com (see link below) for about $13.
