Pregnancy

Prominent septum cavum pellucidum

01/17/2006

Question:

I recently had an ultrasound at 31 weeks. The radiologist said the fetus had a prominent septum cavum pellucidum. I am very worried, can this be a sign of brain damage or a marker for any condition?

Answer:

There is no reported risk of a prominent septum cavum pellucidum (SCP) in fetal ultrasounds. The more reported finding is the fetal ultrasound literature is an absent SCP. In the adults a prominent SCP has been associated with akinetic mutism, a condition when the person is apparently awake, with eyes open, lies mute. immobile and unresponsive. I do want to stress there is no link between fetal ultrasound findings of SCP and akinetic mutism.
