Smoking and Tobacco
Why do people smoke at a very young age?
According to KNOW, kids smoke for 5 reasons:
- To feel grown up
- To fit in and belong
- To relax and feel good
- To take risks and rebel
- To satisfy curiosity
KNOW is a collaborative awareness effort of the United Way of Central Ohio, Columbus Medical Association Foundation, ADAMH-the Alcohol, Drug and Mental Health Board of Franklin County, the Columbus Health Department and Columbus Public Schools, aimed at kids ages 11-13, and parents. It is a very good resource for parents and those caring for children, (click on the Parents and Caregivers section) and a good place to get tips to talk to kids.
KNOW's website is www.helpthemknow.com
Another good resource is the 3/11/1994 Surgeon General's report on "Preventing Tobacco Use Among Young People". You can access this report from the following website: www.cdc.gov
Type in : tobacco and surgeon general in the SEARCH section.
