Sleep Disorders

Huge overdose of Tylenol PM

01/23/2006 05:53PM

Question:

I have a friend who suffers from bipolar disorder and depression. He let his depression medication lapse recently and had great trouble sleeping. He may have taken as many as 40 Tylenol PM. What are the consequences of this?

Answer:

While you don't provide all the details of your friend's ingestion of the Tylenol PM, your question is very concerning.  Given the limited information, I will assume this was a recent one time ingestion.

Tylenol PM contains both acetaminophen (Tylenol) and diphenhydramine (Benedryl).  Both of these drugs, if take in large enough quantities, can be very toxic and even fatal.  Acetaminophen can cause liver damage that can be very severe, leading to liver failure, coma and death.  Diphenhydramine can cause heart rhythm problems, seizures, coma and death.

The amount of drug ingested by your friend would be considered in the highly toxic range.  Your friend needs to be taken to an Emergency Room immediately for prompt evaluation and care!
