Unfortunately, there is no known method of preventing PD currently. In part this is due to the fact that the cause of the disease is still unknown. There are several suspected risk factors that may increase a person's chances of getting the disease, but exactly what role these play is still not thoroughly understood. Factors that have been implicated as potential risks include environmental exposures to pesticides and heavy metals; and certain occupational histories such as agricultural workers, healthcare workers and teachers. Genetic factors likely play a role also, but again, to what degree is yet to be determined.
