Hypothyroidism and Ovarian Cysts02/27/2006 |
I read that untreated hypothyroidism can be one of the causes of ovarian cysts. What do you know about that?
Yes, there are a few published reports of an association between untreated hypothyroidism and ovarian cysts. The association may not be a common one, since I was unable to find a discussion of this association in four different textbooks of endocrinology. It is well known that hypothyroidism (if it is fairly severe) can interfere with monthly ovulation, and a longstanding lack of ovulation has been associated with development of cysts in the ovaries.
