Root Canals

Small laceration gumline after root canal

02/28/2006

Question:

Two weeks ago I had root canal #27. Toward end of procedure, severe burning on right side of jaw. Dentist put temp filling in, scheduled appt 1 week to finish. After anisthetic wore off, discovered small lacertion under tooth along gumline. At next appt was told someimes the root canalis blown out at gum. (My jaw extremely swollen after first procedure) Dentist tried to finish up root canal, butI experienced severe pain. Resked for March 8. Laceration slow to heal but have pain when pressure is applied directly below tooth ie. brushing, eating food. Would you please advise, I am reluctant to return because of the pain I have experienced.

Answer:

It is difficult to answer your question without seeing what you mean by laceration and swelling. The laceration could be from the rubber dam clamp or due to a perforation of the tooth or a number of other things. The swelling you have experienced also could be due to a number of things - infection, root perforation/fracture, gum disease, etc. You may want to get a more detailed explanation form your dentist as to what has been done and the possible causes for your pain. If you are still unsure, I recommend an evaluation by a root canal specialist (endodontist) to determine causes and possible treatment.
