Hysterectomy for cystocele repair?

03/02/2006

Question:

I am a 35 yr old female with stress induced incontinence and cystocele. My doctor has recommended a hysterectomy along with the very involved procedure of tacking up the vagina, bladder, urethra and tightening the muscle opening to the vagina. Why would the hysterectomy be beneficial at my age? Are there any long term complications that I should be worried about.

Answer:

Hysterectomy is not required in all reconstructive procedures for urinary incontinence.  Because I haven't examined you I am unable to comment on your specific situation.  I would suggest you consult with either a urologist or gynecologist who specialized in urinary incontinence in women.
