Smoking and hypnosis



Does hypnosis to stop smoking work?


It does for some people. Many people try hypnosis along with a more traditional approach for quitting.

According to the American Cancer Society,

"Hypnosis is commonly used to reduce stress and anxiety, and create a sense of well being. It can also be used to change undesirable behaviors, such as smoking, alcohol dependency, and bedwetting. It may also be used to overcome common fears, such as the fear of flying or of meeting people. Hypnosis is sometimes used to relieve pain caused by cancer. Supporters do not claim that hypnosis can cure cancer or any other disease, or that it always results in the desired effects. However, they say that it can be a useful addition to conventional therapy for some conditions."

The American Lung Association can let people know where they can find certified hypnotists in their area; their toll-free number is 1-866-QUIT-YES (1-866-7848-937).

It is now recommended that if someone decides to pursue hypnotism, the hypnosis should be done on a one-to-one basis, as opposed to "group" hypnosis. You should also check with your health care plan to see if you are eligible for any coverage.
