Drinking while taking doxycycline

08/14/2006 09:57AM

Question:

I have chlamydia the doctor gave me doxycycline to take for a week if I was to drink just on the weekend im on the doxycycline will it stop working and not clear the chlamydia

Answer:

There are no known interactions between doxycycline and alcohol. Therefore no interactions are likely. The absorption of doxycycline may be affected by co-ingestion with antacids containing aluminum, calcium, magnesium, iron, or bismuth subsalicylate and products containing these substances should be avoided. Dairy products contain calcium and may also interact with doxycycline. Any mixed drink made with milk or other dairy products might interact with doxycycline.

It is a good idea to ask your doctor or a pharmacist who knows you whether it is safe or appropriate to drink or take other medicines with doxycycline or any prescribed medication.
