Professional ballet dancer with calf pain.

03/14/2006

Question:

i have had multiple instances in both calf muscles in the past few months. while performing my calf muscle cramps up in a tight knot, and the next day i can barely walk. the cramp is at the top of my calf near the knee. i don`t know if i should rest it or stretch it out, if ice or heat is the way to go. in both cases the stage was slippery and much harder than the surface i dance on each day, causing me to grip my muscles more than usual. thanks!

Answer:

It certainly is possible that the change in surface as well as the slippery conditions caused you to strain your gastrocnemius and soleus (calf) muscles more than normal.  Stretching and modified rest of your calf along with anti-inflammatory medications and ice should significantly help this conditions over the next week to ten days.  If the symptoms persist or recur on a different surface, I would recommend that you are evaluated by a physician to make sure you have not injured the joint capsule of the knee or a cartilage in the knee.
