Taste bud

03/21/2006

Question:

Hi, Just recently I have been experiencing a problem with a taste bud. I don`t know what sets it off, but for one day it becomes enlarged, turns colors (white and red), and is soar. This problem went away for weeks, and then it happened again. I think it is the same taste bud on the very tip and left side of my tongue. What causes this? What can I do to fix this problem? I`ve never experienced anything like this before, and I`m 24. I`ve researched "lie bumps", but I don`t know for sure if that`s what I have. (I don`t remember burning, biting, or eating salty/sweet foods?????). Thanks for your help.

Answer:

Usually when a taste bud gets inflamed, it is the result of some type of trauma to the area. It could be a bite, scratch, burn, or some other type of physical injury as simple as a scrape from a potato chip or a tortilla chip. This usually does not recur in the same place as yours has.

The next most common source is eating a food that may cause this inflammation. The most common are acidic type foods such as tomatoes and oranges, salty foods, spicy foods, and less frequently sweets.

The next time it occurs, review the foods you have eaten in the previous 72 hours. That may give you a clue. If the problem persists, a visit to an oral pathologist will determine what the inflammation is and narrow down its cause.
