Dental and Oral Health (Adults)

Oral health education?

04/01/2006

Question:

Hi, I`m a dental nurse studying Oral Health Education in the UK. Can you advise me on the best method of evaluating a patient after the initial oral health examination?

Answer:

I am not sure what is meant by the initial oral health examination. Every patient should have a comprehensive oral exam to include a head and neck exam. This includes examining visually the face, head, and neck extra-orally and with palpation to detect abnormal masses, nodes and sore musculatures.

Then a thorough examination of the oral tissues to include teeth and tissues must be conducted. This would include a thorough cancer screening with emphasis on the lips, tongue, palate, and floor of the mouth.

Recent radiographs including at least bitewings and a panographic radiograph should be consulted. The occlusion should be evaluated.

Finally, restorative needs should be determined and planned.

I hope this is helpful.
