Colorectal Diseases

IBS and dicyclomine

04/11/2006

Question:

I have frequent irritable bowel syndrome. Awhile back, my Dr. gave me some Dicyclomine, not specifically for the IBS, but for something else. I recently realized that when I take one, for example before going out for dinner and drinks with people, a situation that can normally cause an upset stomach and diarrhea for me, my stomach felt solid and not unsettled (and no diarrhea). Is it ok to use Dicyclomine like this?--on a continuous, as needed basis, in situations I know may cause IBS?

Answer:

Dicyclomine is good for the spasms that are the hallmark of IBS. Continue to use as directed, and you should be in good shape!
