Pregnancy

Post-abortion sexual intercourse

03/13/1997

Question:

how long should one wait after an abortion before engaging in sexual intercourse or physical exercise

Answer:

Most women are able to return to normal physical exercise within a week of having an abortion. This depends on the duration of the pregnancy and any complications that are incurred during the abortion. The same advice is given in regards to resuming sexual intercourse. For someone who had an early pregnancy (less than 8-10 weeks), one week should provide enough time for the uterus to return to normal. In a further advanced pregnancy, intercourse may be contraindicated for up to 4-6 weeks. Because there are other circumstances that may make it unsafe for you to resume other activity, you should consult with the physician who performed your abortion before resuming either activity.
