Question related to nipple discharge05/01/2006 |
I am 30 years old. For about the last 2 years, my breasts will become painful at different times of the month and varies each month. They are especially painful on the outer sides. Usually, my right breast is more painful than my left. I have also noticed a drop or two of clear nipple discharge a few times from both nipples. This concerns me the most because I have always heard that discharge is not a good sign. I have talked with my physician about this and I had a mammogram 1 year ago which came back unremarkable. I can not specifically palpate any lumps in either breast. However, the outer sides of both breasts (closer to my armpit where my underwire is)feel sponge like, uniform on both sides. Should I have further concern or have another mammogram? Thank you for any advice.
The breasts often become painful in response to the hormone changes that occur during the menstrual cycle. I can not determine from your question if there is any association between the breast pain you are experiencing and your menstrual cycle.
Regarding the nipple discharge you experienced: The breasts are glandular organs, so it is not unusual to have discharge from the nipples--especially if the discharge is from both nipples, it is clear, and occurred as a result of squeezing the nipple (you did not mention how the discharge occurred). There are many reasons for nipple discharge; most are not serious but some can be. However, I am not sure about the "sponge like" feeling of your breast that you describe. Since it is uniform on both sides, it could be something that is normal for you, but since it is a new occurrence, you should seek the advice of your physician.
