Pregnancy

non-surgical abortion

03/18/1998

Question:

I have read about a pill that was an alternative for surgical abortion. Please inform me of its effectiveness, side-effects and where I can obtain a prescription if available in the states.

Answer:

I believe you are referring to the antiprogesterone: RU486 or mifepristone. It blocks the action of a much needed hormone (progesterone) early in pregnancy and leads to disruption of the embryo. When used in combination with misoprostol (a medication that induces contractions) early in the first trimester (before 9 weeks), it is as effective as surgical abortion. Currently it is not available for general use in the United States. The more common side effects are nausea, vomiting, cramping and incomplete abortion.
