Pregnancy

Missed abortion

05/15/2006

Question:

What causes missed abortions as opposed to spontaneous abortions? I read that having a missed abortion as opposed to a spontaneous abortion means that I am more likely to miscarry again - is this true? What causes a women`s body to not immediately miscarry after the baby dies? And why would that increase the likelihood of my miscarrying again?

Answer:

The difference is a matter of timing and symptoms. A missed abortion is when a non-viable pregnancy is found on ultrasound and there are no there clinical signs of miscarriage (such as bleeding). A spontaneous miscarriage will eventually occur and it is noticed with symptoms of bleeding and cramping. One or the other type of miscarriage does not predict the likelihood of miscarriage in the future.
