Can I mix breast milk and formula?

06/19/2006

Question:

I would like to start suplementing my 3 month olds diet with an occational bottle of formula but he won`t take it.Is it ok to mix formula with breast milk in the same bottle, slowly increasing the formula and decreasing the breast milk untill he gets used to it??

Answer:

I’m not sure why you would want to supplement your baby with artificial breast milk (formula). If you have breast milk it would be much better for your baby to take breast milk from the bottle. It may not be the artificial breast milk that you baby doesn’t like, but the bottle itself. Many breast fed infants do not take well to the bottle. It often helps to have someone else give the bottle, and you might need to try it when he is sleepy (as he may be less likely to notice the change) or when he is hungriest.
