Sore spot under tongue

05/23/2006

Question:

I keep getting a white hard sore spot on the under side of my tongue. It occurrs in the same place each time it occurrs and goes away after several days. Sometimes I wake up at night and it feels like I have bitten my tongue but I can`t find a sore spot from a bite. The white spot is very sore to the touch. What causes this and what can I do to get rid of it?

Answer:

This could represent a blocked or disrupted salivary duct associated with one of the small salivary glands located under the tongue.  It would be a good idea to have this checked by an oral pathologist.  Treatment would probably include removal of the spot by an oral surgeon.
