Allergy to flouride

05/31/2006

Question:

MY LIPS ARE IRRITATED AND I HAVE A METALLIC TASTE IN MY MOUTH. COULD I POSSBLY BE ALLERGIC TO FLOURIDE? I USE A TOOTHPASTE CONTAINING FLOURIDE.

Answer:

Almost anything is possible especially regarding allergies, but it is very unlikely that you are allergic to fluoride.  I would suggest you consult your local dentist.  There are tooth pastes available without fluoride, but they are hard to find since fluoride is the most important, main, active, therapeutic ingredient.  If you are an excellent, highly skilled brusher, you can even do an adequate job with just water, floss, and a toothbrush.
