Post hysterectomy06/06/2006 |
I have a friend that I am concerned about that recently had a hysterectomy. What was to be a 5-7 day recovery in the hospital went a total of 27 days and required a second surgery. It is my understanding that as the organs were placed after the surgery, damage was caused to the small intestine. She wasn`t able to keep any fluids down for a week after the surgery so they went back in with a gastrology specialist to repair damage. Since then she has been able to have occasional bowel movements, but struggles to do so and it was 25 days after her intial surgery before she had her first bowel movement. She still has overwhelming nausea and has lost over 30 lbs. She is extremely cautious about how much she eats and what she eats from the fear of nausea. It has now been two months since her surgery and she feels the same. Her primary physician gave her Prilosec to help the nausea which isn`t helping. My friend has been told that she could be having symptoms of menopause, but I really think there is something still wrong. Her system is not at all what it was before the hysterectomy. Is this common post surgery symptoms or is there cause for concern. I`d like to get her to a second opinion, but she thinks it might heal on it`s own. Please advise.
The symptoms she is experiencing are not due to impending menopausal symptoms, but are more likely a result of the complications she had and the repair that was done. Although I don't know what occurred and what was done at the second surgery it is not "common". It can certainly happen and probably occurs at a rate of less than a few percent, but I wouldn't call it common. She needs to get an idea of what to expect in the recovery period. If she doesn't feel comfortable with the results she is getting, she should obtain a second opinion.
