Tongue bleeding

06/19/2006

Question:

I bit my tongue and the bleeding won`t stop. The cut is not long at all as it seems like the blood is coming out a little hole (approx. < 1 mm). It`s been bleeding for a while now, and i`m not sure what to do? Hospital, doctor???

Answer:

Hopefully, the bleeding has stopped by the time you read this.

If the tongue is still bleeding, the blood is bright red and it is bleeding rather freely; you need to see a dentist or an oral and maxillofacial surgeon.  If it is just oozing small amounts of blood, you could try placing a moistened regular tea bag on the area for several minutes.  Chemicals within the tea can help clot the blood, but the tongue has to remain still to allow the clot the form.

As before, see your dentist if the bleeding continues.

Good luck!
