High Blood Pressure |
Three medications for HBP06/26/2006 |
I am taking an Calcium Channel Block and ACE Inhibitor for high blood pressure. Last time I went to the doctor to get it checked it was 140/96. My doctor said that if my blood pressure was up next time that he was going to give me a new medication. What is usualy added to CCB and ACE Inhibitors?
The combination of ACE inhibitor and calcium channel blocker is effective and usually well tolerated. In most cases, the best drug to add is a diuretic, like hydrochlorothiazide or chlorthalidone.
Even a low dose of hydrochlorothiazide (12.5 mg or 25 mg a day) or chlorthalidone (12.5 mg or 25 mg a day), can lower blood pressure very well, especially when added to other medications. This combination is so useful that many pills are commercially available that contain both an ACE inhibitor and a low dose diuretic.
