Breast Feeding

How to start table food at 6months

09/08/2006

Question:

I`m currently exclusively breastfeeding my baby, he will turn 6 months next week.

I would like to know if there is a recommended plan to follow in order to introduce the table food to my baby. Thank you for your response.

Answer:

It is recommended to introduce one new food at a time, spacing them 4 to 5 days apart.

At six months babies needs for iron and zinc increase, so cereals fortified with these or meats should be introduced.

Vegetables and then fruits may be added later. Desserts should be avoided.

Commercial baby foods, although convenient, are expensive and may contain added sugar, salt and fillers.

Pureed table food is as good or better for the baby and tastes better, therefore will likely be better accepted by the baby.
