Burned tongue

07/06/2006

Question:

I recently drank a VERY hot cup of coffee and burned my tongue. Now I have a blister. How do I go about treating this?

Answer:

Normally injuries to the lining of the mouth such as this heal relatively quickly.  It will heal on its own without any specific treatment in most cases.  If the burned area is sore, you might want to purchase an over-the-counter protective medication such as Zilactin.  This is an inert material (it's a cellulose-type of compound) that can be applied to the area and will serve essentially as a bandage.  Tylenol or ibuprofen will also help to reduce the discomfort while the sore heals.
