Recurring blister on my gum

06/30/2006

Question:

I have what looks like a blister on my upper gum. I`ve had it once before and it disappeared completely. I had it about 3 months ago and it stayed for about 1 week or so. I even went to my dentist since that for a cleaning and she did not notice anything, although I did not mention it to her either. Anyways, the blister has returned. It starts off as white in color, very soft and almost squishy. Then at one point a red point appears as if its going to pop. It has blead at one point (I think from my poking at it) and now it is just red and still soft. It does not hurt at all. I wouldn`t even know it was there unless I lifted my lip to take a look at it. What could it be? Do I need to be overly concerned?

Answer:

Blisters on gums may be due to several reasons:

– virutic infection (recurs when the immune system is down).  Heals within 10 days.

– abscesses originating from either root canal and/or gums.  It generally starts with pain and pain is reduced if it is draining.

– trauma to gums.

You should visit a dentist to figure out why you are getting the blister.
