Endometrial polyps07/05/2006 |
Due to several days of heavy post-menopausal bleeding, my doctor performed an endometrial biopsy. The result showed no cancer, but did indicate a polyp. A scheduled hysteroscopy to remove the polyp could not be completed because the doctor could not get the instrument through the cervical canal. Are there other options (other than a hysterectomy) to remove the polyp? Or is it even necessary to remove the polyp if I am no longer bleeding?
Although most uterine polyps are benign, they can harbor malignancy and should be removed especially in a woman who is having post- menopausal bleeding. If every attempt has been made to dilate the cervix in the OR, then you may have to weigh the risks of surgery against the risks of uterine cancer. There are medicines that can be used to try and soften the cervix prior to dilation. If an endometrial biopsy could be performed, then you should be able to dilate the cervix.
