Pap smears07/24/2006 |
My Doctor told me because I am 71 years old, I no longer need a pap smear. I was surprised, and would just like to verify this. Thankyou.
In women over 70, who have had normal pap smear in the preceding years and are not at increased risk for cervical cancer, can cease with screening. Because the risk of cervical cancer is so low in this group, the risks such as invasive testing for a false positive test outweighs the benefits. This doesn't mean that a woman shouldn't continue to have a yearly pelvic exam to look for a pelvic mass or other vaginal abnormality.
