Having sex without using birth control...

07/24/2006

Question:

I just started to have sex with my boyfriend and we used condoms only the first 2 times. My friends encourage me to get on a birth control, but i am scared. I heard so many stories how birth control affects the new born babies in future.

So is it possible to have sex using only condoms and not get pregnant, or if there is any other way to have safe sex without using birth control?

Answer:

It is possible to use only condoms and not get pregnant, but there is still a failure rate of about 12%. Because this failure rate is so high, you should consider a more reliable form of birth control. As an expert in this field, I will assure you that using birth control pills (or the patch or ring) doesn't effect future children. The medicine is out of your system in only a few days. They are so safe that even women who continue them while pregnant don't have any problems in their pregnancy.

Even when you start another method, you should continue to use condoms to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted infections like herpes, chlamydia, gonorrhea or HIV.
