Tongue

08/31/2006

Question:

I have noticed the raise papillae on my tongue. They don`t go away. Is this normal? I also have a prominent crack down the center. My biggest problem however is on both the r and l sides far in the back i have large clumps of bumps. not one but many. i have cronic sore throats and now i am concerned. I put blue food coloring on my tongue to get a better look and now i am petrified. Would oral or throat cancer be in clumps of bumps? if not, what is it. From the v papaillae back i have a million prominent bumps! not to mention my whole tongue is covered inthem when you look at it with the food coloring. Help!

Answer:

Raised bumps (papillae) on top and a crack (fissure) down the middle of your tongue may be normal.  The clumps of bumps on the back sides of your tongue may just be tongue (lingual) tonsils.  Food coloring should make things look more prominent.  You should have your tongue and entire mouth including the skin on your head and neck checked regularly by your regular dentist.
