Menopause

Using prempo

09/06/2006

Question:

I have been on low doses of prempo for about eleven years when can i stop taking it .Joints on my hands have been bothering me are these side effects? Itake it every other day.

Answer:

Joint pain is usually not a side effect of Prempro.  In fact, many women report that their joint pain is better on hormone therapy.  Women can stop hormone therapy whenever they like.  In general we are not recommending that a woman take hormone therapy indefinitely.  Side effects such as stroke, blood clots in the legs and lungs, as well as breast cancer have been associated with hormone use.  These side effects are relatively rare, but they can occur and do get more common with age.
