Burning lips and sore tongue

08/23/2006

Question:

the inside of my lips burn and they are very dry and feel swollen. I also have small red bumps on my tongue. What is this? Thank you

Answer:

The bumps on your tongue are likely normal structures called fungiform papillae that contain some of your taste buds.  You probably didn’t notice them until your tongue became sore.

The description you give of your lips and tongue sound as though you may have burning mouth syndrome.  Additional information regarding this relatively common, but not life-threatening, condition will be attached to this reply.  I would recommend, though, that you have a dentist or dental specialist look to be sure that your tongue and lips appear otherwise normal.

Good luck.
